What about food, water, canteen, eye protection?

One of the most typical RPG questions, will there be any food, that the PC must find and eat in order to stay alive?

Concerning water, it's a really huge question. The importance of water in a desert is impossible to overestimate. So, in order to travel at great distances on foot through sand dunes in the sun should be quite unhealthy if not deadly experience, as the PC will have to carry a cistern of water to survive.

The same thing concerns the fact that the PCs head/eyes are exposed to the intensive rays of the Sun. A canteen and shades or other similar protection (such as sombrero or panama hat ) perhaps should be introduced.

Or maybe we might leave these issues unlooked at, as in the original FO. What do you think?

Well, it should be a game and no life simulation. When traveling through a wasteland/desert you surely need more than only some canisters of water ^^ Then you need food, navigation systems, you need maybe a tent, clothes for day and night since the temperature differs a lot in comparison, you need a lot of stuff then
Lets just keep that point simple as Fallout did. As the main motto should be "Better keep it as Fallout!".

Shades and hats, as we have seen hats in Van Buren and this feature really could be interesting, why not?
Though I don't think that that could be too important to actual gameplay though.

Yes, perhaps, you're right. I just always think about those naturistic things after playing Ancient Domains of Mystery (check this awesome freeware RPG at adom.de)

But water - even if we remember the first FO1 quest is a really invaluable asset and goes very well with the desert setting we have. In fact that could the main limiting factor to distances that could be covered (in a car you could definitely carry more water). As for food, iguana-on-a-stick is okay

Perhaps we could also discuss the water issue.

But shades and hat would be cool, anyway. Lets see what others think.

Food and water has no effect in the first two games. If we are to implement this, I think it should just heal HP. However, it is not a good idea to have food and water as a necessity for survival.

Actually, water does play a bit of a role in Fallout 1. That's why you had the canteen in the first place. When it runs out of water, you will periodically stop in the desert, like a random encounter, and there will be a pop-up saying "You are thirsty" and stuff like that, and sometimes take a little damage (very rare occurrence).

Personally, I like the idea of carrying water and food with you, if only to take up room to keep from being a walking armory/junkyard. Another thing that would prevent that is a weight and bulk amount for each item.

Water could be used as the parameter, that would set up the limits for travels across the desert on foot. So in order to get to a far away place you'll have to bring a car with a lot of drinking water. Even some dark humour could be made of that.

I think we could limit ourselves to water only and have it as some sort of a compromise.

hmm, we'd have water-containers, but water shouldn't be free. (Not until you own awater purifier ) Then rewards of quests must contain more gold to keep the balance. We don't want our players to perish

Maybe there could be an extra bar showing your food/water need, which depletes anytime you travel without supplies. If you contain the food/water issue only to traveling, I don't think it would be much of a hassle to just pack up whenever you go out to travel. It would add a nice touch to the sense of survival.

Oh and if this bar would deplete when you're in the middle of the wasteland, perhaps CHARNAME could pass out and wake up in the nearest city, having been brought there by a random caravan or something.

Well it could work the same as the fuel you need for using the car in Fallout 2. While traveling the map, you supply bar runs lower. It could be debated what happens when it reaches it's zero point, but I like the idea of fainting and waking up in the nearest city. Another thing that could be added is, when the supply bar is between 25 to 0%, you get a high chance of getting an encounter of a merchant. Then you can either buy supplies, steal supplies or kill him for supplies.

As long as the supply thing doesn't require too much effort I think, like I said before, that it would greatly increase the feeling of having to survive.

Waking up in the nearest city having all your posessions stolen by brigands and thieves! Except it would be very annoying indeed, of course...

A thirst system would have the additional side-effect of giving CHARNAME an incentive to drink alcohol, which can only be a good thing!

Just had another idea about the supply thing; if you have higher outdoorsman skill (if we call it that), you will need less supplies per mile. Hell, with enough outdoorsman you wont need any supplies because you can find food and water yourself.

That would make outdoorsman far more important, that is some nice idea really! As Outdoorsman should be really important since this is kinda survival PA RPG =)

How about summing everything up and transfer it to the wiki, where the ideas can be evolved much better?
