How closely related could this game be? I'm writing a story about how Europe reacted to everything but can I name things like the Resource Wars or not?
Or should we simply avoid all of that just to be sure?

I guess that would be okay, since that is really some common reason for a world war Anything else would be new storyline since both regions are cut from the rest of the world since that war. I am curious how such a storyline will look like!!

Well the reason of the war is stated in the first two games, but not to great extent. I think it should be left out since it is not of great importance.

I think writing a backstory for our purposes would be good. Don't forget this does mimic the Fallout universe but is not it. I think we need to have a complete history crafted, that is one of the reasons I think the Fallout series was done so well.

I'm not going to write about the Great War literally, I'm just using the same 'history' as Fallout. The US and China got mad at each other and started bombing, but how did Europe react? What happened in Europe at all? I haven't read about it in the Fallout Timeline, there it's only stated that there was a resource shortage and that Europe invaded the Middle East. I'm writing about that, about the politics and eventually what measurements were taken.
So that's pretty much safe, right?

Or should we simply avoid all of that just to be sure? I havnt completely read The Fallout Bible but its got a lot of good info in it. First we should find out if we can legally use & build around this timeline, its not really our creation after all. If not then we need to create our own story line, but if we can use it as a general guide then it would be very helpful. If you havn't read it, and your planning on doing some writing, go read it, its got a lot of good stuff in it. From the timeline: April 2052: The Resource Wars begin. Many smaller nations go bankrupt, and Europe, dependent on oil imports from the Middle East, responds to the Middle East's rising oil prices with military action. The long drawn-out war between the European Commonwealth and the Middle East begins. Dec 2053: Like an exclamation mark on the end of a very bad year, a terrorist nuclear weapon destroys Tel Aviv. But once again, I am REALLY against stealing other people's work so none of this can really be used until we get permission. I would like to stay as close to the timeline the creators made as possible, but as of now we've gotta create our own timeline. I just think that this is the way we need to be thinking, because the stuff in that timeline is really good. I had posted an idea at NMA, dont know if any of you have seen it so I'll post it again: At one point during all the madness (cities blowing up and all) many Americans that havn't been able to hide in vaults travel to Europe via ships, and by the time they get there EU is nuked to hell too. This is a way of bringing the 50's Americana over to Europe, if we plan it there. Anyways, off to bed for me, hope this gets the creative juices flowing. Continue with the script creations and recruiting, I'm going to find some time to write some myself this weekend - I've got "finals" coming up though so I wont be of too much use until thats over.

Well like I said I havnt read the whole thing, but as long as there's really not much in there about it, your safe to make up whatever the hell you want =P Whether its good or not...we can be the judge of that =P

One thing I forgot to mention...
As for that EU storyline...try to think in the mindset of today's governments, and then try to think what kind of situations they'd be in. They're running out of resources, hardly any fuel for their military jets / ships / tanks - everybody's pissed off at everybody for nuking eachother. I got a friend who actually has her BA in International Relations with emphesis on the middle east, would it help if I asked him a few things? If so, come up with some questions...like how would X country act if Y country imposed trade sanctions against one of its allies...stuff like that. If it helps let me know.
We dont need to be completely realistic but a little insight from someone that knows the area might help.

Yeah I thought of that, I already did a little history research and everything. I'm 'European' and I've followed the current conflicts and items a bit since I'm interested in politics.
And it would be a good thing to ask your friend something. The situation is as following: The shortage becomes a real problem around 2040, the Middle East keeps driving the prices up. In the Fallout Bible Europe invades the Middle East in 2052 as you mentioned, which is the only info about Europe given. I like this idea since I think it's realistic (when desperate enough, one does take extreme measures) and it still would kinda connect our project to the original storyline without license-problems.
So if you would like to ask your friend how the European countries would react amongst themselves, that might help. I have my own guesses and ideas, but it never hurts to hear someone else's opinion.
EDIT: I just had an idea or two. We should just shift the timeline a little just to make sure that we won't get in trouble. But also, how about if we did the opposite of the Fallout timeline? Their timeline is all about the US and China while they only have one bit of info about Europe. So why don't we create a timeline that's dedicated to the European situation and only mentions the bombing of the US and China once or twice?
Oh, and that migrating idea could work, but then there either should be a lot of Americans coming over, or there shouldn't be too much of the fifties Americana since the amount of Americans is limited.

Of course! Why should a storyline about Europe only tell about the USA and China? xD

lol =P
I never meant to really go into details there, but I mean not even mention it. Let alone for the fact that it happened and started a chain reaction. That's what I meant.

Jop thats good enough, really do not bother to invest too much time in something like that. Better start with the real storyline which begins with the character right after chargeneration =)

Quick thought: I'm going to claim that Vaults, Mutants and Radscorpions are in no way needed for a Fallout game. Well - they are fairly central to the real games, but unless we actually get money to buy a license, this isn't going to be a 'real' real Fallout game.
My point is - any story in a nuclear wasteland with rough humor, spectacular death animations and quirky npc's can be a Fallout game. Basically my claim is that if the tone is right, the basic tools (Mutants, Vaults) can be switched around as needed.
So if I'm to suggest something, I'd say set the story shortly after the war, during nuclear winter. It will be different in many ways because of that, but could still be a perfect setting for a Fallout game.

Yep, so do I think. Actually shelters surely will appear in a PA game thats rather common. Mutants are possible in some altered way of course, radscorpions are obsolete and can be replaced simply...

We can assume that at the point everybody in the vaults are still locked away. Maybe we can integrate something like that into our story line, our hero has heard of these vaults and needs to take one over / get his family and friends to a safe location? Just a thought.
