To start accumulating our ideas, I suggest we start with the world setting.
The questions are: - US or Europe? - which region there? - level of civilization (how many people, communications if any); - relation to FO1&2 storyline; - who is the main hero.

I vote for US setting. And it's not because I want to see US burnt under nuclear fire joke Seriously speaking, I vote for US because the whole FO series is based on the 50s atmosphere of US - songs, items, cold war hysteria. It wasn't the same on European continent, I mean the people and their thoughts were different. That's my IMHO.

Well, if we use USA as setting we would really stuck on everything what Fallout is. So the best would be to just mod the Fallout2 engine since we may not use elements of Fallout as we do a new game. So i say we should go to Europe, since this has potential, it is something what is demanded through community in a certain level to know "what happened to Europe" indeed.
I think of some fully destroyed nearly not recognizable environment as Fallout was. So many cities just won't exist anymore as they were before war. Since both continents were rather cut from the other world the relation to Fallout can be rather low concerning the story.
The main hero.. hmm thats something important and difficult to to think of.

What you need to do is think what Fallout is, it is a great slice of Americana. It should be set in the US but not in the south west the south east would be better, Fallout started as a spirutal successor to Wasteland it would be nice to take it back to it's roots . We should also consider the limitations of the old fallout 2 engine I was hoping to port my project over to FIFE, The fallout engine was good in it's day but I am not sure it is the right choice for a fallout 3 with today's modern technology. What needs to be changed in fallout is we should add more levels of customisation, in fallout you looked different. but in fallout 3 you should be able to decide your appearance. Game world wise get rid of tribes in the world of fallout they don't make any sence, yhea sure people wont be as educated as they are now but they wont be as dumb or look so primitive.

I must say, the southeast (Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, all other states in between) is pretty untouched when it comes to Fallout history. That would possibly be the only place in the continental US where you could go from scratch, as Beth did, and retain the Americana feeling without getting torn down by Bethsoft.

I would vote for either America or Europe, but both have their limitations to be considered:
America: - The basic world has been set by Fallout 1 & 2 - Super mutants can be implimented - Deathclaws can stay - Americana
Europe: - Super mutants would probably not exist here - Deathclaws would probably not exist here - Different languages - Almost complete freedom in designing the world
I feel more for a europe setting, because of the creative challenges it brings. The language thing is easy enough to solve; either make everyone speak english because of some world event, or make people speak with accents, whatever. We get a lot of freedom in designing towns: which cities are the big players and which have crumbled into ghettos. We can create new threats; not a lot of radscorpions but maybe a mutaded version of the common bee, or tick, or... whatever.
As for that 50s feeling.... We could either use europes 50s feeling, varying from each country, or we could just keep the american 50s feeling.

Europe would give you more freedom, but fallout is ammerican. not many people would play it because it's not set in the US anymore. But if it was a spiritual scuessor to fallout it would be played by more people.

Regarding location, my heart is saying US, but then our setting would be very limited. It would be boring to set our location in the West coast again, and we don't want to bite off Beth's East coast idea. If it has to be US, i chose Texas area. I feel it has a lot of potential. If the location is to be in EU, where do we even begin. I know it has to be one of th major countries, but which one? Britain, Russia, France, Germany etc.
Level of civilization should be diverse as FO1&2 was. There should be primitive areas where people are still living in tents and huts, as well as small towns and fully developed cities. There should be at least one HUGE city which is much more advance than the others. Cities should have a wide variety of ethnicity, at least 4 from every continent.
The main hero should be discussed in another topic as the main story line is attached to him/her.

Well, as you know, my heart stays with US because I'm FO fan (and conservative person in general ). As for any other settings, I'd propose not Europe, but Russia (USSR), or somewhere in between. Two reasons for that come to mind: - the cold war took place at the time between the USSR and USA, and both countries very well prepared for the nuclear war; - Moscow metropolitain (underway railroad) was designed with the possibility of nuclear war in mind, and the metro stations lie very deep in the ground, and some of them even have enourmous metal shutters just for the case of war, so these metro stations could become Soviet version of US Vault-Tec. But still, it lacks the Amerciana feel Fallout has, and I really like idea of Texas.

Setting the Fallout location in non-English speaking countries really doesn't make any sense. It'll be kinda weird running around Germany or Russia or France and everyone is speaking fluent English. If we do pick a location, hopefully, one of our members happens to live in that state or region, so we can get more details about popular locations and its history. I'm really leaning towards Texas. It is a really big state and has many interesting places and people. From Texas, we have the possibility of expanding the map SW into northern Mexico! I'd really love to see some hispanic people in this game. In FO2 we had whites, blacks, and asians, but no hispanic people. They are being left out . Texas also have 4 states bordering it, so we have a wide variety of the things we can do around that region.

I've missed it, you're right. I think we're limited only to English-speaking countries. Also I like the idea of hispanic people as well.

I think we can get away with setting the game in the Northeast USA.
I wouldn't mind seeing a game that was located between Chicago, Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia. At one point these places were the largest industrial locations in America.
Bethesda doesn't own the Post Apocalyptic genre or the USA, and don't have much imagination as from what we have seen.

If we do set the Northeast US, we'll have a lot of interesting states to work with. We can have rivalries between these states as well. Like Boston Red Socks vs NY Yankees. People from these two cities just seem to want to tear each other apart. However, we also have to take settings into consideration. If we do Northeast US, we won't have a desert wasteland setting, since all of those states are almost always covered in snow. I dunno, it's really up to you guys, i'm just throwing out ideas.
All in all, where ever it is, i definitely want it to be in the US.

You think that after some nuclear war which destroys nearly the whole world, there would certainly be the same amount of snow in those states as today? I do not think so ;D
After all I read here, some nuclear war should really have no effect on anything. Why not just leave it away from the storyline? Since after nuclear apocalype is before? haha

It actually only snows around (northeast) here for like 3-4 months of the year and that would be about 20 days where it is actually snowing. However it generally is very cold during that time frame.
Can we get some poll action for a better idea of where people stand, allow multiple selections.
Southwest US: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado
